For a while there had been some rumors about changes in the drug policy of the Netherlands, but now it finally seems that they are true. The government of the Netherlands wants to get rid of tourists that only come to their country to toke up. And this is not only the case in Amsterdam as the south of Holland shares borders with both Germany and Belgium. Every day hundreds of tourists drive their car from Germany and Belgium to the bigger cities in the south of the Netherlands to get a hold of their beloved herb. The new law would mean that only Dutch citizens would be allowed to register for a so called “weed pass”, giving them the right to buy 3 grams of weed per day. Every so called “coffee shop” has the right to register up to 2000 clients. This of course means that the establishments are losing a lot of customers and that smokers can’t always get their cannabis at the shop of their choice. The government has decided to let the new law go in effect from 1st of January in the whole country, but already last Tuesday it has gone in effect in the Southern part of the Netherlands. It was a very hectic day in cities like Maastricht, Heerlen and Tilburg. In Maastricht the coffee shop owners had decided to keep their doors closed and only one shop opened its doors. The owner opened up in the morning just to refuse the first foreign customers. The Belgium tourists that got refused immediately went to the local police station to file an official complaint, claiming that it is racism to only serve Dutch customers. After this incident the owner of the shop decided to let all other tourists in his establishment without even checking any ID or registration and immediately was given an official warning by the local authorities. The next day the owner of the establishment repeated his action and will now probably be forced to close his shop for at least a month. He wants to take this case to court to prove that the new laws are discriminating foreigners. Very few weed smokers in the Netherlands are actually willing to register for a weed pass, as they feel that their right to privacy is being violated. The new law will also open up a whole new market for street dealers and already some dealers where spotted in the streets of the cities in the South on Tuesday. In Belgium it is legal to carry an amount of weed up to 3 grams, but it is not possible to buy any in Belgium, leaving pot smokers no other choice than to buy their cannabis in Holland or grow their own plants. It is also legal to order Dutch cannabis seeds online, but in Belgium it is only allowed to grow a single plant. At the moment local governments still have the choice to apply the new law to their district and tourists in the South can still drive to places like Amsterdam, where the new law has not gone in effect yet. But will the future bring? Will even Dutch citizens have to start growing their own OG Kush in order for them to keep smoking? Or will that also be impossible at some point? In Maastricht a group of about 200 smokers have paraded through town in a march against the new law and also recently on 20th of April many people have demonstrated nationwide against the new laws, but so far the government is not bending and will keep upholding the law and prosecute shops that are not following the rules.
So if you always dreamt of visiting the Netherlands to smoke a big spliff in the famous streets of Amsterdam, you better be fast.

Summer Festivals

<dc:subject>POPH Blog</dc:subject>

As warmer weather is just around the corner, my thoughts are on events that are available to us this summer season. There are many great things to do during the summer. We have outdoor water sports, camping, 4-wheeling, horseback riding, well... the list goes on.
Open air music festivals are a wonderful thing and becoming more available in this area as well as around the nation. Being a music lover I always try to attend whenever I can. As cannabis users or cannabis decriminalization advocates I believe it is important to attend 420 friendly venues throughout your area. Not only is there music, music and more music, there is also much information and a coming together of a community of diverse yet one minded individuals. This is a great thing. We have freedom to gather and socialize, sharing sweet tasting ganja, sharing tips and ideas.
Another good reason to attend these events is to flex that freedom muscle. I remember when these festivals were facing constant harassment with road blocks, choppers flying overhead, generally harassment as a deterrent to our peaceful gathering. This is rarely heard of these days. If we make these events bigger by attending often we can keep this momentum going.
Let’s take a look at the 420 events and make plans. If you have been to these events, you know the value. If you have not taken the time to attend any of these events you should do yourself a favor and plan on it.
Let’s have a great time this summer and keep yourself and others safe. We can show the world that we are not a threat and that we will not be ignored or put down. Over the last couple years there have been highs and lows in our effort to free ourselves as cannabis users from maltreatment by the government. With at least half of the country (If you can believe the polls) are for outright legalization of cannabis. Many more are for legalizing for medical uses.

With this many Americans having this opinion it would seem reasonable that the government of and for the people should do our bidding, but they do not. What they are doing is cracking down and spreading more misinformation. One need only to follow the money, lots of it, to see why these tyrants do what they do.

I must admit that I wonder quite often about the validity of the voting system in this country. All the same, I exercise my right to vote. I find the more I get involved on a local level, the more leverage you have. I encourage everyone to pay attention to what is going on around you and try to be pro-active to help us all become free. This is comes down to much more than just recognition of our rights to cannabis. We are loosing more and more freedoms every year. Everyone should register to vote and everyone should vote. There is strength in numbers and we have more power than most think. Lets unleash the sleeping giant that is our large and diverse community. Let’s use our rights before they disappear like they have for countless others before us.

I am a firm believer in smaller Government and less government intrusion into our lives. That is why this year I am once again voting for Ron Paul. I am also getting involved in the caucuses for the first time in my life. I hope all of you try to become more civic minded and to watch what is happening all around you. Encourage each other to make a stand somehow. Everyone has their own unique strengths. If we band these strengths together we are only stronger.

“Finally, there seem to be but three Ways for a Nation to acquire Wealth. The first is by War as the Romans did in plundering their conquered Neighbors. This is Robbery. The second by Commerce which is generally Cheating. The third by Agriculture the only honest Way; wherein Man receives a real Increase of the Seed thrown into the Ground, in a kind of continual Miracle wrought by the Hand of God in his favor, as a Reward for his innocent Life, and virtuous Industry.” Benjamin Franklin, Positions to be Examined, April 4, 1769
